Introduction
- No other gods
- No carved image
- No misuse of the divine name
The Nature of the Command
- “take” – take up, oath language.
- “the name of the LORD your God” – God’s proper name
- “in vain” – no frivolous or blasphemous use
What is forbidden in the third commandment?
- Don’t take an oath in the name of the LORD that you aren’t going to fulfill.
- Don’t overtly speak in ways that the name of the LORD.
- Don’t use the name of the LORD for selfish purpose.
- Don’t use the name of the LORD flippantly.
