Introduction
Text: 1 Samuel 24 – David given an opportunity to kill Saul in a cave where he and his men were hiding.
Responding to mistreatment
- Cultivate a Biblically-informed conscience (1 Samuel 24:4-5, Romans 2:15, 1 Corinthians 4:4, 1 Timothy 1:5).
- Maintain a proper respect for authority (1 Samuel 24:6-8, Romans 13:1-2).
- Be so exemplary in your behavior that they are forced to acknowledge your upright character (1 Samuel 24:9-13, 1 Peter 2:12).
- Recognize that you are unable to accomplish justice (1 Samuel 24:14-15).
Conclusion
There is a beauty in David’s behavior. In his humility, he did more to bring about God’s plan than he would have with sword and spear. We need to be more concerned about advancing the gospel than winning an argument or defending our pride.
